Pre-war development of the six cylinder Alvis culminated with the announcement of the 4.3-Litre in August 1936. The “4.3“ was based on the 3½-litre Speed Twenty-Five introduced the previous year and was powered by an enlarged version of Alvis's new seven-bearing, overhead- valve engine. The cruciform-braced chassis featured the kind of advanced thinking long associated with the marque: independent front suspension and a 4 speed, all-synchromesh gearbox, introduced on the preceding Speed Twenty, were retained with the additional refinements of driver- controlled Luvax hydraulic dampers and servo-assisted brakes. Claimed to be the fastest un-supercharged saloon on the UK market, this stylish Alvis 4.3-Litre sports saloon was dispatched from the factory to coachbuilders Mayfair of London on 8th February 1937. Mayfair only made two bodies for Alvis 4.3s and this is the sole survivor. In 2013, the Alvis won the first place within its class “Antebelice Coupe“ of the Romanian annual Concours D’Elegance, held in Sinaia. This car has 92,615 miles on board.
