Specifically tailored for the German military forces, the VK was a largely simplified vehicle, with a longer wheelbase than that of the regular 170 V. Having kept the vehicle’s original front end, the VK boasted short, diagonally cut doors and provided sufficient room for four. The choice of construction materials was also different with a reinforced chassis and body shell for improved protection against enemies. Ground clearance was also elevated to allow fitting larger, all-terrain and mud tires while suspension was modified as well to improve handling on rough terrain and ride firmness. The versatility of the VK was further enhanced by special mounts of machine guns.
The target groups to whom it was intended the Mercedes 170 VK, were officers and non-commissioned officers of the military forces of the Wehrmacht infantry. The 170 VKs were not intended for supreme commanders of the Wehrmacht and SS, respectively Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler and Hermann Goering. They used other Mercedes-Benz models, superior and more expensive than the model 170 VK, respectively W31 and W131, G4, 770 and 770 K, W07 and W150 models.
