Lincoln Continental 1961

Istorie

Completely redesigned, the 1961 Lincoln Continental abandoned the contrived styling and chrome gewgaws of the previous year's Mark V with a return to the refined, unadorned, balanced design that had characterized the original Continental.

It was a stretched version of this car that carried President Kennedy on the day of his assassination.

Full description

Lincoln stunned the American luxury automobile market in 1961 with the introduction of a new Continental. Completely redesigned, it abandoned the contrived styling and chrome gewgaws of the previous year's Mark V with a return to the refined, unadorned, balanced design that had characterized the original Continental but was modern, up-to-date and responded to its luxury market's evolution.

Lincoln decided to build the cars as four-doors. In fact, until 1968, all Lincoln Continentals were four-door vehicles. The length of the wheelbase was a relatively short 123” until the car was stretched to 126” from 1964 through 1969.

Thus, the 1961 Continental's most notable feature was a return to rear hinged ’’suicide’’ rear doors that made entering the back seat easier than the front. Bumpers were integrated with the grille. The only chrome on the sides was a small full length spear along the tops of the sharply creased fenders. The 1961 Lincoln Continental was clean, sharp, refined and dramatically different from anything else in the world.

Every new Continental underwent a 12-mile road test before it left the factory. The Industrial Design Institute awarded the designers of the 1961 Lincoln Continental a bronze medal.

This 1961 Lincoln Continental is the rare four-door convertible. Only 2,857 were built, just 9% of the Continental's total production. Power by the only available engine for the 1961 Continental, a 7,046cc V8 rated at, 300 horsepower, this Continental is optioned with air conditioning in addition to the standard power assists for steering, brakes and windows. It is a fully restored car finished in yellow with white leather upholstery, brown carpets and a white vinyl top.

No mention of these cars is complete without the sad remembrance that it was a stretched version of this car that carried President Kennedy on the day of his assassination in 1963. That very car resides at the Henry Ford Museum to this day.

This car has covered 71.621 miles (approx. 115.300 km).
