The W123 was the most successful Mercedes up to date. It was sold in more than 2.7 copies between 1976 and 1985. The 230CE was one of the two engine versions available on the coupe bodystyle.
The 4 door saloon Mercedes Benz was launched in 1976. The new model was larger in wheel base and exterior dimensions compared to its predecessor, the W115.
Still used to this day as cabs in many developing nations, the W123 has earned itself a reputation as one of the few truly bulletproof classics. Four diesel options were available, along with four petrol options – the top 280 model was also available with fuel injection. The most powerful petrol engine had 182 hp and the most powerful turbodiesel had an output of 123 hp.
The following year, Mercedes debuted the W123 coupe (or C123, to Mercedes diehard fans). available as a 230C (later substituted by the 230CE version), 280C, 280CE and 300CD. Later, Mercedes launched the Estate version, known as the S123.
Because of its instant success, a black market has developed in West Germany. Costumers were willing to pay extra for a slightly used car than to wait 12 month for delivery of a new car.
2.7 million W123s were produced over a nine year period. 2.37 million were saloons, just under 200,000 were estates and less than 100,000 coupes were produced. The rest were limousines, chassis for ambulances, but these were very rare. Most sought after on the classic market is the Coupe – far costlier than the saloon when new, it is accordingly more expensive on the classic market.
This unit has covered 263,039 km and still presents good original condition.
