Pontiac was an American automobile brand owned by General Motors. Sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, it was slotted above Chevrolet, but below Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac in the five divisions of GM.

Originally launched in 1967, the muscle car Pontiac Firebird received a third generation in 1982. Pontiac invested in producing a modern platform for the new Firebird with good handling, braking and aerodynamics, while the engine range was expanded annually until 1989. In that year, Pontiac was chosen to provide a Pace Car for the 73rd edition of Indianapolis 500 race.

Over the years, Pontiac built several Trans Am special editions for Firebird, typically upgrading handling, suspension, and horsepower. In 1989, the special edition Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was built in 1,555 units, one of which served as pace car in the 1989 Indianapolis 500 miles race.
