Many traditional customers of Mercedes-Benz had a hard time in getting used to the modern 180, launched in 1953. In order to be able to offer a suitable model for those customers and to avoid a premature stop of production of the 170 series, improved 170 models were presented alongside the 180 model. The 170 S-V was born.
The Mercedes-Benz 170 S was a luxury car which was produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1949 until 1955 in various gasoline and diesel powered forms. It was initially offered with a 1.8 liter version of the 1.7 liter inline-four cylinder M136 engine used in the slightly smaller production type 170 V. It was the first Mercedes-Benz to carry in its name the suffix “S” (for Sonder modell (Special model) denoting a superior level of comfort and quality.
The 170 S was released in May 1949, initially sharing the chassis number of the W136 170 V, and closely resembled it. Following a revision in January 1952, the 170 S model was in many ways improved. The revised model, which was internally called 170 Sb (W 191), was now fitted with a finger-tip gear shift and a button starter which was integrated into the dashboard.
With the arrival of the all-new 1.8 liter Mercedes-Benz W120 180 "Ponton" in 1953, both the 170 V and the 170 Sb were discontinued. The 180 model was the planned successor of the 170 Sb and had been practically constructed from scratch, sporting a totally different exterior design and a unibody construction formula. Many traditional customers of Mercedes-Benz had a hard time in getting used to this modern concept; neither did the new model have a separate chassis, nor did it have the traditional fenders.
In order to be able to offer a suitable model for those customers and to avoid a premature stop of production of the 170 series, improved 170 models were presented alongside the 180 model. These new types - dubbed 170 S-V for the gasoline version and 170 S-D for the diesel version - were lanched in July 1953.
The 170 S-V combined the slightly larger body from the 170 S with the less powerful 45 HP engine that had previously powered the 170 V.
In September 1955, the Mercedes-Benz 170 S-V was withdrawn from production. There was no direct replacement.
The car has 8,558 Km on board.
