The Phantom IV was the most exclusive Rolls-Royce model ever built. Only 18 were made between 1950 and 1956, exclusively for royalty and heads of state, without further selling option. Of these, 16 specimens have survived.
By creating the Phantom IV the manufacturer broke with their earlier decision to cease production of the series of "big" Rolls-Royce Phantoms after the end of the Second World War. All examples of this unique model were bodied by independent coachbuilders and their bonnets surmounted by the kneeling version of the Spirit of Ecstasy.
Phantom IV was built after Rolls-Royce received an order from Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The Royal Rolls-Royce was hand-built on a stretched Silver Wraith chassis. When completed in July 1950 its delivery was accompanied by a public announcement stating the Phantom IV had been "designed to the special order of Their Royal Highnesses, the Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh".
This particular Phantom was sold new to Aga Khan III, the 48th Imam of the Nizari Ismaili community. The unit has left its owner only after his death, sold by his wife. When Rolls-Royce sold the car they included a clause which said he could not sell the car. However after his death his widow sold it to the Mayfair-Lennox hotel (Missouri, USA), where it was used to pick up guests at the airport but due to the boot short capacity it was resold in 1962.
In August 2015, at the 65th edition of ‘Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance’, this car won ‘best of class’ for ‘Rolls-Royce and Bentley Postwar’ and it also won the ‘Lucius Beebe Trophy’. Also, in march 2016, this unit won the best car interior award at the 20th Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, and in may 2016 it received a Honorable Mention in Class C "Sur Mesure et Haute Couture" and Special Prize "Rolls-Royce Trophy". Also in 2016, this unit was named "Postwar - Rolls Royce, Ecstasy of Beauty" at the "Alla Corte dei Medici" competition.
Another Rolls-Royce Phantom IV is also included within Mr. Ion Tiriac’s car collection, previous owned by Ernest Hives, Rolls-Royce director, then to The Duchess of Kent.
