Full description

The Phantom V was an ultra-exclusive, four-door saloon built by Rolls-Royce from 1959 to 1968.

It was one of the largest cars ever to emerge from its Crewe factory, and Rolls-Royce used the occasion to launch its now-familiar 6.3-litre V8 engine. It was a suitably enormous car, tipping the scales at almost 3 tonnes. The Phantom V had a 3.6m wheelbase and the passenger space was suitably enormous – especially in the rear.

Power steering was standard as was the automatic transmission, while underneath the imposing bodywork was a lengthened version of the Silver Cloud's chassis. The coachbuilders H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward and James Young made bodies for the Phantom V. Most buyers went for the H.J. Mulliner six-light styling, usually painted black.

Performance was adequate for what was expected of the car, but fuel consumption was astronomical if the car was pushed. In 1968, it was replaced by the even more extravagant but visually similar 6.7-litre Phantom VI, and that car remained available well into the 1990s.

Only 793 Phantom Vs were ever produced. The Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth the Second used a Phantom V as their official state car. These cars were only retired from service in 2002. The Governor of Hong Kong used a Phantom V until the handover to China in 1997. The Shah of Iran owned one of these cars until his exile. King Olaf the 5th of Norway used a 1962 model and also Yugoslav President Tito owned a private Phantom V.

The Phantom V was also popular in movies and among entertainers. John Lennon of the Beatles commissioned a custom paint job for his Phantom in the style of Romany gipsy wagon.

This particular Phantom V was completed on March 23 1960 and was bought by Sir Elton John on May 25, 1990. He commissioned the pink and white paint and the matching interior.

The Tiriac Collection is the only current gallery that features all 7 Phantom models of the I-VII series.. This car was bought in 2010 and it has 38,732 miles on board (approx. 62,380 km).
