World War Two is one of the main historical reference points of the previous century. Many countries had to rebuild their towns and cities after it, as well as their infrastructures, while companies were also faced with the challenge of getting back up and running. But when Mercedes-Benz’s launched its Ponton range in the 1950’s, first with the four-cylinder W120/121s from August 1953 and then the 170 mm longer, six cylinder W180/105/128s from March 1954, it was clear the three-pointed star was back on its way to the top.
The Mercedes-Benz W180 was a 6 cylinder sedan, coupe. The models associated with the W180 chassis code were the 220a and 220S. The W180 was the first in a series of Mercedes-Benz models to receive the "Ponton" moniker. This was in reference to the ponton-shaped exterior styling, which was also featured on the later W128 line.
Visually, the 220S featured a new one piece front bumper, instead of the 3-piece bumper used on the 220a. Also, the twin chrome and rubber strips running under the doors of the 220a were replaced with solid chrome strips. The most obvious difference is the addition of a chrome strip running along the front fenders and doors of the 220S.
The model was available with a 4 speed column shift manual transmission, with an optional Hydra-automatic clutch. This made use of small micro switches on the gear selector that automatically disengaged the clutch when the driver changed gears.
A similar model appeared in the “Goldfinger” movie (1964), the third film of the James Bond series and the third to star actor Sean Connery, as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond.
