Full description

Debuting in 1954, the 220a heralded Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation cars based upon unit-body construction. Riding on a longer wheelbase than the prior 180-series “Ponton” line-up, the 220 provided improved passenger space and available room under the hood for a new 2.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine with overhead valves. Servo-assisted brakes were standard equipment beginning in September 1955.

The 220S was made available in August 1957, with the dual Solex-carbureted engine delivering 120 horsepower and providing increased performance to match the model’s sleek and sophisticated styling.

Produced between 1953 and 1959, with some models stretching through 1962, this car replaced the pre-war 170 Series models and was the first truly new car from the company since World War II. It was exceedingly modern with integrated headlights, fenders that met the hood and stretched back to the windscreen and a squred-off trunk.

In Germany they were known as pontonkarosserie, or ponton body style, in reference primarily to the fenders of the Mercedes. The term, pontonkarosserie, specifically referenced vehicles of a standard size, with a frontally mounted engine, and a trunk at the rear. In spite of many cars being pontonkarosserie formula during this period, and well into the 60’s, for some reason the ponton name stuck to the Mercedes-Benz.

A similar model appeared in the “Goldfinger” movie (1964), the third film of the James Bond series and the third to star actor Sean Connery, as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond.
