Having appeared in many successful British movies, including Julius Caesar, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Bigger than Life, actor James Mason took delivery of this Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I from dealer Peter Satori in 1957. Mason was the first owner of the car.

Inspired by the Silver Dawn, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was introduced in 1955 with a gracefully curved body in the “Ruben” style, designed by J.P. Blatchley. Retaining the traditional grille and headlights while subtly recalling the separate fenders of earlier models, the Silver Cloud marked the company’s first step toward a more modern, integrated design. In keeping with Rolls-Royce tradition, the car was built on a separate chassis, allowing bespoke coach built versions for clients seeking a personalized expression of the marque’s most popular model. The standard body was crafted from steel, complemented by lightweight aluminum panels for the doors, bonnet, and boot – a forward-looking approach that anticipated today’s automotive weight-reduction strategies.
Equipped with a six-cylinder inline engine, a four-speed automatic transmission, and independent front suspension, the car could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h, “should Sir be in a hurry,” as a contemporary Motor magazine review wryly observed. Although the powerplant was carried over from the pre-war Silver Wraith, it was praised for its smoothness, often considered more refined than the V8 that would later power the Silver Cloud II. It also does not fall far behind its successor in terms of performance and is said to be easier to maintain. While owners of ordinary cars were content with two- or three-speed automatics, or even manual gearboxes, the Silver Cloud came equipped with a four-speed automatic, a specification that would only become outdated, around 50 years later.

Copies of its original Rolls Royce build sheets indicate Mason as the first owner. The second owner was Hollywood Picture Vehicles, in whose ownership the Cloud is understood to have appeared in a number of films.
The beige interior has been outfitted with a burled wood bar including original crystal decanters and glasses, and has had recent work including a new headliner, carpet, restored wood, and restored vanity mirror. The interior is also newly equipped with a hidden modern sound system. Further, the brakes and transmission have been rebuilt.
