Triumph TR3A is the first series production car to be equipped with disc brakes.
The Triumph TR3 sports car was introduced in 1955 to replace the old TR2, on which it is based. In 1956, the TR3 became the first series production car to be equipped with disc brakes. Produced between 1955 and 1962, the TR3 featured a double wishbone, coil springs front suspension, leaf springs and solid axle at the rear. These endowments have given the car crisp and responsive handling abilities, but in difficult cornering, the dated chassis would lead to oversteer. Equipped with the 95hp, 1991cc engine, the Triumph was one of the most powerful cars in its class. On later models, power grew even more, to 100hp, with the introduction of the 2,138cc engine. The TR3A was an upgrade of TR3, launched in 1957, the new model featured upgrades which included a wider front grill, exterior door handles, lockable boot and a full tool kit as standard. Total production of the TR3A was 58,236 units of which, it is estimated, and only around 9,500 still survive. The final evolution of the TR3 was the, unofficially called, TR3B, produced only in 1962. It had only minor esthetical changes and was equipped with the larger 2,138cc, 105hp engine. On all models, the 4 speed transmission was available with optional overdrive. Electrically triggered on top 3 gears, gave the car no less than seven forward gears. This particular example was dispatched on the 10th of November 1959 to California, where it stayed until it was imported back to Europe in 1992. Later, in 2005, the car has been completely restored. In 2013, the gearbox and overdrive unit have been rebuilt. This car has 85,209 miles on board.
