Cadillac Eldorado 1964

Istorie

The Eldorado name appeared in the Cadillac range in 1953 for the top of the range line of convertibles, limited edition of the Series 62. The name Eldorado derives from the Spanish words “el dorado” which translates “the golden one”, a name given to the legendary chiefs of South American Indian tribes.

Full description

The first generation of Eldorado, built only in 1953, was a special-bodied, low production, convertible version of Cadillac’s 1952 “Golden Anniversary” concept car. Only 532 cars were built. Although based on the Series 62, the Eldorado cost twice as much. Standard features included windscreen washers, signal seeking radio, power windows and a heater.

In 1954, the second generation was launched; the special body was replaced with a standard Cadillac body, the Eldorado being distinguished mainly by trim. The new car cost considerably less than the first generation and the production rose to 2150 units. For 1955 the Eldorado received its own rear end style by adding high, slender and pointed tail fins. This was a style that spread worldwide in the golden epoch of American auto design. A coupe version appeared in 1956, called Eldorado Seville, at which point the convertible was named Eldorado Biarritz.

Starting with 1957, now 3rd generation, the Eldorado saw a revised rear end. A model based on the Series 70 was also available as a hand built limited edition called Eldorado Brougham.

In 1963, Eldorado already reached its sixth generation (built also in 1964 with a minor facelift). It was again restyled and technically reclassified as a subseries of the De Ville range. Standard equipment now included power brakes, power steering, automatic transmission, power windows, power seat and power vent windows. Also, a new 7.0L engine joined the lineup, producing 340 HP.

The name Eldorado derives from the Spanish words “el dorado” which translates “the golden one”, a name given to the legendary chiefs of South American Indian tribes.
