Full description

Beginning with seventh generation, in 1965, the Eldorado was integrated into the Fleetwood series and the Biarritz name dropped. Only in 1973, with the ninth generation, the Eldorado was removed from the Fleetwood series and re-established as its own series. By 1976, Cadillac’s became so swollen that they ploughed through corners, averaged 21l/100 km and were as quick as a tank. Despite a massive V8, power output was only 190 HP and a top speed of just only 175 km/h. The ‘76 Eldorado marked the end of an era: it was the last American convertible.

When Cadillac announced that the convertible will be dropped at the end of 1976, the market fought to buy out the last 200 cars. People even tried to jump the queue by claiming they were distantly related to Cadillac’s founder. A 72 years old man bought six units.

The 1973 Eldorado was chosen to serve as a Pace Car in the famous Indianapolis 500 race. It was the second ever front wheel drive to be used to lead a pack of race cars; the first was a 1930s Cord. 53 of these special track cars were built and another two that were actually used in the 1973 race. One of the two was presented to the race winner, Gordon Johncock, as a prize.

Two engines were available on the ninth generation Eldorado, an 8.2L V8 and beginning with 1977, a 7.0L V8, both coupled to a 3-speed automatic transmission.
