At its 75th anniversary Harley Davidson was property of a group that also distributed Head tennis racquets. At that time, Mr. Ion Tiriac was manager and coach of Guillermo Vilas, Argentinian tennis player. They were both requested to promote the 75th anniversary and a special series of 500 units, out of which the motorcycle included in collection is unit number 001. The unit was then sculpted and arranged in Belgium, as for the owner’s special request.
Harley Davidson motorcycles have been produced for more than 110 years. The company is a family business, established by William Harley and the Davidson brothers in 1903. Together they created primarily large, air-cooled, V-twin, heavy motorcycles that fans hail as the greatest two-wheel machines ever built.
The first FL was launched in 1941, it was equipped with a 74 cubic inches (1210 cc) “Knucklehead” engine. The nickname came from the shape of the rocker covers. From 1948 the engine was changed with the new Harley Davidson “Panhead” engine.
In 1949 a new model of the FL was launched. Designated the “Hydra-Glide” to emphasize the use of hydraulically damped, telescopic front forks. In 1958, the rear of the FL also received coil-over-damper suspension and the name was changed to “Duo-Glide”.
The FL “Electra-Glide” was launched in 1965. It was the first large capacity motorcycle from Harley Davidson to be equipped with an electric starter, hence “Electra”. In 1966 a new engine was introduced, the “Shovelhead”, it offered a 10% increase in output over the older model.
This 1979 model is designated FLH 80 because of its 80 cubic inches of engine displacement. It is equipped with side luggage compartment, a trunk and radio.
