The XJ 220 held the record for the fastest production car, from 1992 till 1993, after being
clocked at 343 km/h. It also held the production car lap record for the famous Nuerburgring
until the year 2000 with the time of 7:46.36.
A similar 1992 unit was also included by Sir Elton John’s car collection.
Jaguar presented XJ220 concept car at the 1988 British International Motor Show in Birmingham, just four months after Jaguar claimed victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The reception for the all-wheel-drive mid-engined concept car was so strong that, after two months, the company had decided to put it into production and quickly received 1,500 orders.
When it came out in 1992, the road car’s styling was carried over faithfully from the stunning XJ220 concept design, but the concept’s naturally aspirated V12 had been replaced by a Cosworth turbocharged 3.5 litres V6 with 540 HP. The market launch came just three years after Jaguar was bought by Ford in 1989. This enabled the car to reach 100 km/h from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds. Also, all-wheel drive had been abandoned in favor of rear-wheel drive.
All these developments were not to the liking of many of those who had put money down in 1988 on what they expected would be a V12 powered all-wheel-drive car from an independent and British-owned Jaguar. Many orders were canceled, and the global economic recession of the early 1990s made it tough to find new buyers. In the end, only 275 units were built.
However, Jaguar XJ220 held the record for the fastest production car from 1992 until 1993, after being clocked at 343 km/h. It also held the production car lap record for the famous Nürburgring circuit until 2000 with the time of 7:46.36. British artist Elton John has also included a similar 1992 Jaguar XJ220 model in his personal collection.
This particular car has travelled only 500 kilometres and has a Silverstone Green body color.
