The name 512 referred to the car's 5 liter, 12 cylinder engine; a deviation from Ferrari's established practice of naming 12-cylinder road cars after their cylinder displacement (as the 365 GT/4 BB). This 1981 Ferrari 512 BB is the last and most desirable year for the carbureted boxer and one of only 929 models produced.
A Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer (BB) is one of a series of cars produced by Ferrari in Italy between 1973 and 1984. This 1981 Ferrari 512 BB is the last and most desirable year for the carbureted boxer and one of only 929 models produced.
The name 512 referred to the car's 5 liter, 12 cylinder engine; a deviation from Ferrari's established practice of naming 12-cylinder road cars (as the 365 GT/4 BB) after their cylinder displacement. The engine was enlarged to 4,942 cc, with an increased compression ratio of 9.2:1. Power was slightly down to 360 HP, while a dual plate clutch handled the added torque and eased the pedal effort. Dry sump lubrication prevented oil starvation in hard cornering.
The flat-12 enjoyed substantial advantages over the conventional V12, most significantly its low center of gravity and reduced harmonic vibration. Since it implemented the Daytona’s reciprocating internals it was relatively cost effective for Ferrari. It was also more compact, a factor most appreciated by Sergio Pininfarina, whose job it was to package the engine, running gear and ancillaries and still leave room for two passengers.
The 512 BB is absolutely stable and predictable at speed, prompting Road & Track to declare the 512 BB “the best car we have ever tested.”
The car comes in the color silver with a red interior.
