Based on S-Type, Jaguar 420 is a compact sporting saloon with 248 HP which "offers a unique a combination of qualities in its own field". The model has appeared în some movies în 1970s.
Jaguar 420 was revealed at the October 1966 London Motor Show and produced for two years as the ultimate expression of a series of "compact sporting saloons" offered by Jaguar throughout that decade. 420 was based on the Jaguar S-Type and the name is a reference for its 4.2 litres engine. Although it was £200 more expensive, 420 effectively ended buyer interest in S-Type.
A perspective about the 248 HP model was provided by Road & Track Magazine in December 1967. The test-drive concluded that "the 420 sedan offers just as unique a combination of qualities in its own field. Jaguar offers brisk performance, outstanding braking, excellent handling and ride, quality finish, and luxury in abundance, all in an automobile that's easy to maneuver in today's maddening traffic."
In 1967, its first full year of production, the 420 easily outsold the other Jaguar saloon models still in production like 240, S-Type and 420G and effectively ended buyer interest in the S-Type. In 1968, 420 sales were again well in excess of those of the S-Type and 420G, but by this time many potential 420 buyers were hanging back to wait for the new Jaguar XJ6. The Coventry factory stopped making the Jaguar 420 in 1968, just over two years after production began and with just 10,236 units produced.
A 420 starred in the 1971 British horror film “Blind Terror”, the underrated 1972 Oliver Reed movie “Sitting Target” and in a nearly forgotten 1974 Michael Caine thriller called “The Black Windmill”.
This car has travelled 14,096 miles (approx. 22,685 km).
