Full description

The Ford Mustang is one of the great American success stories, a sporty compact with youthful appeal that captured the spirit of the times perfectly when it was launched in 1964 and entered the history books as one of the fastest-selling cars of all time: 418,000 in the first year, over a million by 1966.

Such was the hype surrounding the Mustang when it appeared at the New York Fair in 1964 that the first cars were auctioned off to the highest bidders; one buyer slept in his car overnight while the cheque cleared, to ensure he wasn’t out bid.

When Shelby’s GT500 was introduced in 1967, it sat comfortably at the top of the pyramid of Mustang hierarchy. Under the hood lay a gargantuan 428-cubic inch (7L), V8 that could produce 435hp. Not only did the GT500 offer more in the way of power, but it also offered more in terms of luxury accoutrements than the slightly less powerful sibling did. Unlike the GT350, the GT500 was also offered in both coupe and convertible body styles.

The last year of production for the GT500 was 1969, even though some late 1969 models were sold as 1970s. That model year also saw the introduction of a restyled Mustang, and the GT500 received all the same changes. The car’s overall footprint increased, but the styling was markedly more aggressive. Fastbacks were now dubbed Sportsroof models, and hoods contained a trio of NACA ducts. This was effectively the end of the GT500.

According to the Shelby American World Registry, this 1969 GT500 is one of 1,536 Sportsroof models built that year, and it was delivered new to Borgman Ford Sales, of Michigan, in April 1969. It was sold in August of that year to its original owner, Donald Hayes, of Muskegon. The car is signed by Caroll Shelby on the dashboard.
