The RS 200 is a road going version of Ford’s group B rally car. In compliance with the FIA regulations, in order to homologate the race version, 200 street legal units were in need to be built. The Ford RS 200 was built in a mid-engine, 4 wheel drive configuration on a tubular steel chassis and a glass fiber composite body.
Although rallying’s group B formula lasted only a few years, it inspired the birth of some of the most remarkable four-wheel-drive monsters. The prettiest by far, present in top 3 winners of the WRC, was Ford’s RS200.
Because only 200 such cars were to be built to meet the group B requirements, and Ford’s factories could not cope with the build, the company leased the Reliant building in Shenstone to do the assembly job. Starting late, but with the intention of producing a car which could not only win at world level, but also carry a familiar family style.
The Ford RS200 was built in a mid-engine, 4 wheel drive configuration on a tubular steel chassis and a glass fiber composite body.
The Ford Cosworth turbocharged engine street engine produced 250 hp at first, but later the 444 hp at 8000 rpm versions was released. This gave the RS the ability to accelerate to 100km/h in just 3.5 seconds and do a standing ¼ mile in just over 11 seconds. Despite its power, best result was a 3rd place, in the 1986 WRC Rally of Sweden.
Most powerful version of the RS was said to have a monstrous 815 hp. This made the car even faster, 100 km/h taking only 2 seconds. That made the RS200 the fastest accelerating “production car”.
For the interior, Ford sourced parts from its 1980s range of cars, including the dashboard, door skins and switchgear. The car offered little comfort.
Only 220 RSs were ever built. 200 for homologation purposes and an extra 20.
This car has only 993 Km on board.
