Just 1,066 pieces of 220S Coupés and Cabriolets were produced for 1957, of a total of 3,429 built over four model years from 1956 to 1959. Limited numbers when new add to their desirability and exclusivity today.
Debuting in 1954, the 220 A (W 180) heralded Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation cars based upon unit-body construction. Riding on a longer wheelbase than the prior 180-series “Ponton'' line-up, the 220 provided improved passenger space and available room under the hood for a new 2.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine with overhead valves. Servo-assisted brakes were standard equipment beginning in September 1955, and the 220 S was made available in March 1956, with the dual Solex-carburetor engine delivering 105 HP and providing increased performance to match the model’s sleek and sophisticated styling.
The most desirable of the 220 S variants were the limited-production two-door models and while technically mass-produced, craftsmen highly skilled in the coach-building arts finished the cars by hand at Mercedes’ Sindelfingen, Germany facilities. Boasting impressive fit and finish throughout, the cars were priced at a premium of nearly 75 per cent over their far more common sedan counterparts. In all, 3,429 examples of the 220 S Coupé and Cabriolet were built between 1957 and the end of production in 1959. Limited numbers when new add to their desirability and exclusivity today.
While the Cabriolet has enjoyed many years in the spotlight, astute Mercedes-Benz collectors and marque enthusiasts have rightly appreciated the 220 S Coupé for its all-weather practicality and striking hardtop roof design with an upright C-pillar and fashionable wraparound rear window, which proved an unqualified hit with buyers in the all-important U.S. marketplace.
This example was sold in San Francisco, California and it has remained a West Coast car ever since. The most original car, which became affectionately known by its prior owners as "Daisy Rose," was repainted approximately 30 years ago in the current two-tone livery, which has held up quite well and remains very attractive today. The interior is highly original, with the seats, headliner, burled wood, stainless trim, and trunk compartment all displaying a wonderful patina.
This car has covered 23,755 miles (approx. 38.229 km).
