Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Hardtop Coupe 1973

Istorie

Finished in a fantastic shade of Brewster Green over a black interior, this '73 Trans Am is an outstanding example that was the subject of a extensive restoration in 2017 by a marque specialist. Pontiac produced just 146 Trans Ams in Brewster Green, with 74 of those equipped with the automatic transmission like this car.

Full description

On the heels of the Ford Mustang's auspicious debut in 1964, General Motors scrambled to ready their entry into this new class of so-called Pony Cars. In 1967, the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird siblings hit the streets, sharing a platform but each with a unique style and character. The top of the Firebird range was the Trans Am, named for the wildly popular SCCA production-class road racing series. The Trans Am got Pontiac's best engines paired with a specially developed handling package, resulting in one of the nimblest cars in the class. The second-generation Firebird/Camaro debuted in mid-1970, and like the Mustang, had grown to accommodate the massive engines trickling down from the full-size lines – transforming pony cars into top-line muscle cars.

From 1970, Pontiac shoehorned the massive V8, 7,456cc big block into the Trans Am resulting in one of the most sought-after performance cars of the era. The '73 models carried over with styling refinements and most notably, marking the arrival of the iconic Firebird graphic on the hood. Designed by John Schinella, the "Flaming Chicken" – as it's become known – is an unforgettable symbol of this wild performance car era, instantly synonymous with Pontiac's legendary pony car.

According to the accompanying dealer invoice, this car was delivered via Palmer's Pontiac of Logan, Utah with features including the Y-code 7,456cc V8 engine, heavy duty cooling, custom trim group, AM/FM Stereo 8-Track player, centre console, rear defogger, and of course, the Firebird hood decal. The MM colour code confirms this as an original Brewster green car, and it rolls on Rally II wheels with trim rings—as it was originally equipped. The car retains its numbers-matching engine, though the transmission is reported to be a period replacement.

Many enthusiasts count the 1970-73 Trans Am among the best-looking American performance cars of the era. Finished in a rare and striking colour combination, and with a high-quality restoration this example certainly lives up to that sentiment.

This exhibit has covered 10.340 Km.
