The production of the model took 13 months and included impressive engineering ideas. The vehicle was built in honour of the 112th Medical Division from World War II, the division in which the father of the project’s initiator served, in the Pacific theatre.
Before America’s involvement in World War II began in late 1941, the U.S. Army sent out requirement to interested American manufacturers that it needed a new transport vehicle to fulfill some direct specifications. The new vehicle would have to prove itself easy to manufacture, to be capable of being transported in current Navy craft and could be constructed in the shortest amount of time possible. The GMC firm won the Army contract in 1941, and company facilities ramped up for production.
Design was utilitarian to the core, designed to utilize a minimum of moving parts and thus making it relatively easy to repair in the field. This also lent the vehicle well to configurations and versatility. The slab-sided cab sat behind the engine housing which was aspirated through a grille element along the front facing.
This is a 13 month build project, done with some very impressive thoughts and engineering. Built to honour the World War II 112th Medical Division that the father of the builder was assigned to during the Pacific theatre. The truck started out as two tones on pickup and was stripped of its sheet metal and mated to a 1953 GMC pickup cab and hood. The rear bed then was custom made to meet the look they desired and to accommodate the scooter with special mounts. The 8-lug wheel setup gives a great look and mean look. Two extra spares are mounted on the bed.
The paint used for the hood and cabin is matte green, specific to the U.S. Army, while the wooden part of the trailer and rails is customized with camouflage (camo) paint. Additional fuel canisters and ammunition boxes are mounted on the sides to complete the military look. A few .50 calibre bullet cartridges further enhance this appearance, along with an appropriate design around the dual side ports, which also includes a sunshade for the windshield. The custom front grille provides the desired military look, and the “teeth” can be easily removed or painted over. The new gas tank is located underneath the bed, and the towing package is set up to attach a scooter or anything else that requires towing.
This exhibit has covered 484.851 km.
