Full description

At the Geneva Spring Motor Show in 1955 the smaller SL appeared in its final form. It was available as a roadster, which was actually a cabriolet with wind-up windows and a fabric top, or as a coupe which was basically a hardtop version with a removable alloy roof.

The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL had an all independent suspension and was produced by Mercedes-Benz between May 1955 and February 1963. A prototype was first shown at the 1954 New York Auto Show.

The saloon platform was shortened and strengthened to compensate for the open body of the SL.

The engine with gearbox, front suspension and steering were all mounted on a detachable subframe, not different from modern cars.

The engine was completely new, using OHC. Its 120 hp were sufficient to give the elegant roadster a top speed of 171 km/h.

The servo-assisted drum brakes and the all synchromesh 4 speed gearboxes made the 190SL very popular in the United States.

Alongside its hyper-expensive race-breed sports car – the 300 SL – Mercedes offered the less exotic, but no less refined 190SL.

Frank Sinatra, Alfred Hitchcock, Kirk Douglas and Patrick Dempsey owned a Mercedes-Benz 190 SL.

This particular car has been completely restored in 2012 and has 60,729 km on board.
