The E-Type’s design found a place in the Museum of Modern Art due to the fact that the car was designed from the heart and the world has been in love with it from the start.

When the Jaguar E-Type was first revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, it wasn’t its sleek and elegant proportions that caused the most wonder, nor was it claimed 241 km/h top speed; it was the fact that its list price was just £1,500. That was still a lot of money at a time when small runabouts could be had for a few hundred pounds, but it was far less than a Ferrari or Mercedes sports car cost back then.
The Jaguar E-Type was an instant classic, an exercise in cool aerodynamic and unashamed showmanship producing probably the most beautiful sports car of the 60s. It had the ability to live up to the looks too. The 241 km/h that Jaguar claimed for the E-Type was devastatingly quick in 1961 (in reality only the tweaked – up press cars could achieve it, and 225 km/h was nearer the truth), making the new Jaguar Britain’s fastest production car. Better still, it was probably Britain’s greatest bargain pricewise, undercutting its nearest rival, the Aston Martin DB4, by a third.
The curvy shell, inspired by the Le Mans – winning D-Type racer, was immensely stiff – all the better to take advantage of its new wishbone and coil spring independent rear suspension. Combining near – limousine ride comfort with vice – like grip, even on the slender cross – ply tires that look like something of a bike to modern eyes, the new Jaguar handled superbly.
Pop stars, racing drivers and royalty jostled for position in an ever – lengthening waiting list for the car. Lew Grade wanted to borrow one for his new British TV series, “The Saint”, but Jaguar turned him down because they could sell every car they could make.
