Armstrong Siddeley was a British engineering group that operated during the first half of the 20th century. It was formed in 1919 and is best known for the production of luxury vehicles and aircraft engines.
Armstrong Siddeley was created in 1919 by the fusion of the mighty Armstrong Whitworth engineering combine and the Coventry based Siddeley-Deasy Company. Introduced in 1935, the Armstrong-Siddeley '17hp' (its actual RAC rating was 16½hp) featured a six-cylinder overhead-valve engine of 2,394cc coupled to the firm's characteristic Wilson pre-selector four-speed gearbox. Three different chassis lengths enabled the 17hp to cater for sporting motorists, owner-drivers and the carriage trade while mechanically the cars were conventional for the period, with semi-elliptic springs all round and mechanical brakes. Production of all types had amounted to only 4,260 cars by the time production ceased in 1939.
Manufactured in March 1938, this Armstrong-Siddeley 17hp carries 'Redfern' four-door tourer coachwork by Maltby, a company founded during the Edwardian era in Sandgate, Kent. In 1926 company founder John Maltby sold out to Mr. Redfern, chairman of whiskey distillers, Johnnie Walker, whose sons took over the running of the coachworks. The revitalized Maltby acquired several agencies and provided catalogued designs for several manufacturers, Armstrong-Siddeley among them, which included its 'Redfern' brand dropheads.
Maltby is noteworthy as the first British coachbuilder to automate the folding/unfolding of the convertible hood, initially (in 1935) using the 'Jackall' system's hydraulic pump and subsequently by means of an electric motor.
This Redfern Tourer was restored, including the engine rebuild. The car has been re-commissioned after long-term storage, which involved cleaning the fuel tank, fitting a new carburetor, rebuilding the radiator and a full service history.
This car has covered 70,576 miles.
