The formidable Fleetwood Series Sixty-Special sedan was known world-wide for elegance, opulence, and that poised dignity that was the hallmark of every Cadillac. It was the “Cadillac of Cadillacs.” No other automobile captured the respect and admiration as the Fleetwood Series Sixty-Special’s.
This was the Cadillac that stood out among other Cadillacs. It’s completely new profile and interior elegance marked it as one of the most dramatic motorcars of all time. The distinctive new rear fender design, the tasteful use of chrome trim, and the luxury of its appointments made it an exceptionally beautiful motorcar.
Cadillac was completely re-engineered and restyled for 1957 in the inimitable style of Harley Earl who exulted in longer and lower streamlined design with abundant details. The Cadillac engineers had given him a lower and stiffer frame to work with in 1957. It employed a tubular X-member at the center with no side rails yet achieved much better torsional stiffness than earlier Cadillac perimeter frames. While structural rigidity was important to Harley Earl and the GM Design staff, much more important was the flexibility the new frame gave them to lower the passengers’ seating and produce a clean, low design.
