It’s been more than half a century since a Mach 1 last graced the Mustang line up. The Mach 1’s mission has always remained the same: to be a faster, better-looking and more manageable version of the Mustang GT. The defining feature is a pair of large nostrils embedded in the front grille, which feed the 5.0-litre V8 motor. The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 retains the same grille design as the 1969 Mach 1, paying tribute to it.

The Mach 1 was designed to fill the gap between the Mustang GT and the Shelby GT350 or GT500, and judged on that criteria, it's a success. It’s noticeably faster, more manageable and generally more sorted than the GT.
At its core is a 5.0-litre V8-engined Mustang GT, but the Mach 1 gets stiffer front and rear suspension sway bars, a Torsen limited-slip differential, extra bracing, six-piston Brembo brakes and a high-flow radiator. The car is equipped with the optional 10-speed automatic transmission, which lets the Mach 1 rip through gears almost like a sport motorcycle and with Mach 1's optional Handling Package, which brings a more serious aero set-up, adjustable suspension mounts and lighter 19-inch wheels, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.
The Mach 1's suspension is bolted to the former GT350's front and rear subframes and features Ford's latest spec of magnetorheological dampers, which offer three modes to match the powertrain settings of Normal, Sport, and Track. Even in Normal mode, the Mach 1 feels responsive and sporty, while still comfortable.
Few sport coupes can match the balance and capability of the Mustang Mach 1. Making the most of its 480-horsepower V8 and 10-speed automatic transmission, our test Mach 1 hit 60 mph in a quick 4.1 seconds and blitzed the quarter-mile in 12.2 seconds at 112.8 mph.
