21 Window Bus is a luxury edition of the Volkswagen Type 2 van, known officially as Transporter. The name signifies the number of windows, of which eight are panoramic windows in the roof. This particular unit has a black and white scheme color.
In 1950, Volkswagen launched Type 2, a light commercial vehicle known officially as Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, depending on body type. The most luxurious version of Type 2 was developed from 1951 and was known as Volkswagen Samba.
In the United States, Volkswagen vans were informally classified according to the number of windows they had. This particular model has 21 windows, including eight panoramic windows in the roof. To distinguish it from the normal Volkswagen van the name Samba was coined.
Instead of a sliding door at the side, Samba has two pivot doors. Also, the Samba has a fabric sunroof. At that time Volkswagen advertised with the idea of using the Samba to make tourist trips through the Alps.
Sambas were painted standard in two colors. This particular unit has a black and white scheme that continues inside. Even though the van looks vintage, the stereo audio system incorporates iPod connectivity. Backing the van is a 1,835 cc version of the famous 4 cylinder engine with a 4-speed transaxle, while the electrical system was upgraded to a modern 12-volt specification over the original 6-volt.
This car has covered 29,230 miles (approx. 47,041 km).
