Packard Hawk was one of the first cars with limited-slip differential, but the controversial styling often described as "vacuum-cleaner" affected the popularity of this model. Only 588 units of Packard Hawk were sold.
Packard was an American luxury automobile marque active in the local market since 1899. In 1954, Packard merged with Studebaker, another American maker who had a much bigger dealer network.
Packard executives soon discovered that Studebaker had been less than forthcoming in all of its financial and sales records. Studebaker's break-even point was an unreachable 282,000 cars at a time when the company had barely sold 82,000 cars in 1954. The new Studebaker-Packard Corporation decided that Studebaker should take care of high-volume and commercial cars, while Packard was to re-occupy the luxury market.
Packard Hawk was the sportiest of the four Packard models produced in 1958. Studebaker-Packard was the first manufacturer to popularize the limited-slip differential, which they termed Twin-Traction, and most Packard Hawk units came with this technology. However, the styling was controversial, often described as "vacuum-cleaner" by detractors. Because of this, only 588 units of Packard Hawk were sold.
The model has come to be more appreciated today than in its debut. Its rarity and status as the best-regarded of the 'Packardbaker' final-year cars have made the Packard Hawk quite collectible.
This car has travelled 59,644 miles (approx. 95,987 km).
