The development of a small agricultural tractor was Adolf Hilter's idea: the new tractor would drive agriculture as a Volkstraktor (people's tractor), in parallel with Volkswagen, which was supposed to enable mass motorization for the population.
This Porsche-Diesel Super S 308 tractor was completely restored after year 2000.
Dr. Ferdinand Porsche's design consultancy built a handful of prototype tractors prior to WW2. The development was Adolf Hilter's idea: he imagined an agricultural 'Volkstraktor' ('People's tractor'), in parallel with Volkswagen, which was supposed to enable mass motorization for the population.
After the war's end, Porsche was barred from producing its own tractors (only companies that had been making tractors prior to and during the war were permitted to do so) and thus was forced to license its designs to other manufacturers. Porsche did develop a series of one-, two-, three- and four-cylinder air-cooled engines ranging in output from 14 to 55 hp.
Production began in 1950, initially in cooperation with the Allgaier Werke GmbH (under the Allgaier brand) and then, from 1956, in cooperation with the Mannesmann Group, who had an assembly plant in Friedrichshafen. where Porsche tractors continued to be built until production ceased. Over 125,000 tractors were manufactured here under the Porsche-Diesel brand between 1956 and 1963, many of which were exported, Porsche's agricultural products gaining the same reputation for sound engineering and superb build quality as their road-car relatives.
An unusual feature of Porsche's tractor system (fitted to all models right up to the end of production) was its hydraulic coupling between engine and gearbox, which permitted smooth clutch-less gear changes and thus reduced wear on the transmission components.
This Porsche-Diesel Super S 308 is powered by a three-cylinder air-cooled engine producing 38 hp. The Super S 308 model was a long version of the Super N 308, which had comparable technical characteristics. The Porsche-Diesel Super S 308 was the successor model of the Allgaier A 133 S. Later, the Super S 308 was replaced by the more modern Porsche-Diesel Super N 309 .
Completely restored after year 2000, it was purchased by the late owner, an enthusiastic private collector, and since then has seen little use.
