This Mercedes-Benz is one of the most sophisticated and also complicated cars produced by Mercedes over time.A special engine was developed for the 600 in the form of a 6.3L V8 with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) and Bosch mechanical fuel injection. All 250 hp were needed to propel the 3,340 Kg of fully loaded car.
Apart from the Pope and governments, famous owners of 600 included celebrities such as Coco Chanel, Hugh Hefner, Elizabeth Taylor, John Lennon and more. Notable dictators including Nicolae Ceausescu, Josip Broz Tito, Fidel Castro, Kim Il-Sung, Kim Jong-Il and African revolutionaries Idi Amin and Jomo Kenyatta all used the 600. Saddam Hussein also owned a long roof landaulet 600.
Luxury features included a complex hydraulic system that powered everything from the windows and seats to the automatic closing doors, sun roof and boot lid. Adjustable, self-leveling, air suspension gave the car a good ride.
The 600 came in two main variants, a short wheel base and a long wheel base chassis. The short could be purchased as a 4 door saloon or a 4 door saloon with a power divider window to separate the front from the rear of the car. The long wheel base chassis was the base for the four door Pullman limousine and the 6-door limousine. There were also special limousines built in landaulet style.
There were also two coupes built. One of them was given as a gift to Dr. Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the car’s designer, when he retired from Mercedes.
