In 1986 the group B rally formula was banned because of a string of fatal accidents in the World Rally Championship, caused by the extremely powerful group B prototypes, group A then became the top formula for 1987.
The sudden change in rules left many manufacturers without a suitable race car, except for Lancia. The Delta HF four-wheel-drive, developed by Abarth, with its 2 liter turbocharged engine was clearly suitable for a rally car.
The new rules obligated each manufacturer to build at least 5000 road legal units in order to homologate the race version. The road car was such a success that Lancia actually built more than 40.000 cars.
For their first season in WRC with the new car, Lancia won 7 out of the 11 championship rounds and has gained the manufacturers championship and the drivers’ championship with Iuha Kankkunen.
Lancia went on to win 6 consecutive WRC manufactures championships, from 1987 to 1992, 46 WRC victories and four drivers’ championships with Kankkunen in 1987 and 1991 and with Miki Biasion in 1988 and 1989.
This 1993 Delta is the Evoluzione version has a stiffer body, wider wheel arches, bigger wheels, improved suspension and a more powerful engine. The car is also equipped with a “dog-box” transmission, so called because of the engagement rings that resemble a dog bite. It enables ultra-fast gear change without using the clutch.
