In 1953, Chevrolet showed a brand new and revolutionary sports car to a public starved for exciting new offerings from Detroit. The Corvette wowed crowds at GM’s Motorama car shows, but only 300 were produced that first year. In the decades that followed, the laws of creative destruction saw many beloved automobile manufacturers disappear from the landscape. During much of that time Chevrolet engineer Zora Arkus Duntov dedicated himself to turning Corvette into a world beating sports car, a task that sometimes put him in direct conflict with his less visionary corporate bosses.
But 40 years after its debut, the rough-hewn little roadster had evolved into a sophisticated V8 powered road burner whose exploits earned it the sobriquet of “America’s Sports Car”, and Chevrolet celebrated the occasion with a special 40th Anniversary Package.
This 1993 Corvette 40th Anniversary coupe has been part of the Ed Foss Collection. Power comes courtesy of the LT1300hp V8 engine mated to the standard 4 speed automatic transmission, with power steering and brakes supplemented with excellent FX3 Selective Ride and Handling Package pioneered by GM and introduced in 1989.
The 1993 40th Anniversary package was available on all models. It included Ruby Red metallic paint and Ruby Red leather sport seats, along with special trim and emblems. 6,749 were sold at an additional cost of $1,455. All leather seats have the 40th emblem embroidered.
